How can I open (in a viewer, for example) a multi-page TIFF file to a page other than the first page?

I am working with images of late-18th century documents. We have concatenated all the pages/images of each individual document into a multi-page file. In most cases we want to open to the first page, but not always.

In some cases, however, we have more than one letter in a single file. Letterbooks (where a person copied letters being sent), for example, are treated a single documents even thought they might contain hundreds of different letters. (There are important reasons, that we need not go into here for doing this. I'd be glad to discuss the rationale with anyone interested.) Some of these letterbooks are quite long (one has over 500 pages/images). A search-engine, using text files containing information related to the images, will locate specific letters of interest to the user. If one of these is a letter recorded in the letterbook, I need to be able to open the file at the page on which the desired letter occurs.
