Rather than reduce the number of available build systems it may be that adding more might be valuable.

I've almost had a heart attack in reading this!

The libtiff project suffers from lack of maintainance. Adding more complexity will not help. 3 build systems is already more than what we can bear. Most open source (or proprietary) projects have a single build system.

We have a number of pull requests waiting for complementary reviews in https://gitlab.com/libtiff/libtiff/merge_requests

And as raised by a number of people, libtiff has efficient binary distribution channels on Windows. I'd claim that very few people do need to build it from source, and if they need, I'd consider them as seasoned enough developers to take the load on their shoulders if they're unhappy with the build system we provide.
