It's not a large file support issue - it works fine on some files larger than 3GiB but not others and I have no idea why not.

I just built 3.8.2 and it does exactly the same.

listgeo suffers the same problem.

My guess would be that it works on files where the directory data is before the 2GB mark. If you are convinced there is more to it than this then we can try and dig into it. We would need to know various details about operating system, config.log results (for libtiff) and so forth. Basically we would need to determine what underlying functions are getting used for stdio.
