I would appreciate links to what are hopefully "reference" images that reflect the correct output according to spec.

This lack of reference reader/writer/viewver is why I said to Joris about trying ICCLAB ( I understand that ITULAB is "great").

I thought about this some more, though any testing is really hard right now and thinking is just about the only thing I can do.

I'm pretty sure the image on the bugzilla entry pointed to is ITULAB, not ICC or CIE Lab. The difference in white would be quite noticable, and the image has a white background, so there can be no mistake.

If you meant to say you recomend using ICCLAB or CIELAB instead of ITULAB, I'll have to agree, providing that's an option for the writer. (Writers that write ITULAB, usually do so because they get the stream from a fax machine and don't want to decompress/recompress, so there's not much option there.)
