The answers from Olivier pretty well confirm what I had expected.

For the few TIFF files I expect to have to handle, it looks like my best option for the short term is to convert them to PNG and just archive the originals.

At some point I  may attempt to build a thumbnail just so my apps won't have to treat these Tiff images as exceptions.
