In fact that's probably an argument for changing TIFF_IO_MAX to be a *much* smaller number (like 1MB), and leaving out the GetVersion calls.

From past testing I've done, I think it's highly likely that 16MB is already past the point at which you see performance gains from reading in larger chunks.
