I think libtiff 3.9 is in pretty good shape in it's branch, and I have migrated my project - GDAL - to use libtiff 4 from head with good results. I hope we can issue a libtiff 4 release candidate at some point. I'm not personally aware of serious issues with it.

libtiff 3.9 is indeed in good shape. Unfortunately due to problems in the tag directory code I still find 4.0 unusable for my application and am surprised that it works for you. Libtiff 4.0 fails its own test suite miserably. More than likely the fixes for 4.0 are trivial. The hard part is knowing what the fixes should be. :-)

There was a time when libtiff 4.0 was working fine for my application but I get the impression that last minute changes broke the directory code again.
