Is it vital that when using TIFFClientOpen that tif->tif_fd be set? If tif->tif_fd is not set, will it break libtiff?

It's just returned by TIFFFileno() and - according to grep - not used anywhere else.

I'd suggest to modify TIFFFileno() accordingly so that it returns some reasonable value for your application (e.g. -1).
