Which library do you use for read tiff files compress whith jpeg. I have the same error message and I think it comes because I use jpeg6b (may be the last jpeg version).

My idea is: try to unload your jpeg library and load and older library

Files compressed by the Wang Image program distributed with Microsoft Windows give this message. See if Wang Image will uncompress your images.

I guess it is original TIFF 6 JPEG, with 6 for the value of the Compression tag.
