Sure, but given the rate at which things change in libtiff, we could also have a libtiff policy of only updating the major version when the ABI changes. :)

The libtiff policy is that it will be updated as required. :-)

It is possible that the major version might get changed even without significant changes to the libtiff package version because the libtiff source code is almost the same. If this sort of thing might happen, it will be discussed on this list in advance.

We will strive to avoid disruptive updates.

Being correct (from interface management standpoint) is now the requirement, rather than submitting to arbitrary political pressure or historical user perceptions of how things should be.
