The current CVS has reverted back to having the same problem as the 3.7.0 release with the ".so" part of the libtiff shared library being dropped. I believe this had something to do with automake versions or similar. I just updated my CVS from about 11/24 to current and once again saw this problem.

Is this a question of automake/autoconf 1.9.2 vs. 1.9.3 (with 1.9.3 being broken)? Looking at the cvs log of libtiff/Makefile.in is suggestive.
