The TAR format is not compressed and is an open format. I'm just trying to understand how it would be easier to convert the "acquired files'' (I still don't know which format is used) to a single tif file rather than to put them in an plain archive file, especially if nothing special is done with the resulting file but storing.

Also, I may be wrong but tiff files don't include CRC according to the standard (https://www.adobe.io/open/standards/TIFF.html), making them as susceptible to bit errors as any other uncompressed file format.

I know I'm not answering the original question, but sometimes we over-complicate things out of habit :) => "*we have so far relied on (baseline) TIFF...*"

Nearly every system can create a single "tarball" out of multiple files using a native command.
