I had the same proboem. It is a 'feature' of the NT download - I presume you have NT. Simply rename the file to'tiff-v3_5_2.tat.gz' and at least WinZip will understand it. The download software doesn't like multiple file name extensions so all but the last '.' are replaced by '_' - I have no idea why the final 'gz' is changed to 'tar'.
