You are mistaken with regard to JBIG2 status. JBIG2 is a fully approved ITU-T/ISO standard, see ITU-T Recommendations T.88 and its T.89 application profiles. http://www.itu.int/rec/recommendation.asp?type=folders&lang=e&parent=T-REC-T .88
TIFF-FX Extension 1 is the TIFF specification for JBIG2. TIFF-FX is the IETF TIFF RFC (RFC2301) developed with Internet Fax in mind, see ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2301.txt and its revision draft http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-fax-tiff-fx-11.txt. The first extension to the TIFF-FX RFC, TIFF-FX Extension 1, is currently in draft status and it is the reference for JBIG2 in TIFF. http://www.parc.xerox.com/ietf_fax/draft-mcintyre-tiff-fx-Extension1-02.txt
You may obtain an evaluation download version of a tool to realize your TIFF G4 -> TIFF JBIG2 needs at http://www.alphaavenue.com/details.php?tech=Silx
Please inform me as to how this tool satisfies your needs.
I hope this isn't off-topic; apologies in advance if it is.
I will soon need to convert multi-page TIFFs (using Group 4 Fax compression) to JBIG2 compression, and wonder if any of you know of a pleasant little tool that comes close--one that runs nicely from a command-line, and doesn't perform movies and play music and otherwise act like a pinball machine? C source, freeware preferred, of course, but a commercial program isn't out of the question if it's of good quality, and sensible.
Not much out there yet, as far as I can tell, but JBIG2 isn't even out of draft yet.
I recall seeing reference to "CompressionType 9" somewhere, for JBIG2, when it is included in TIFF.
Can someone point me at the relevant documentation for JBIG2 compression within TIFF (qua file format)?
Thanks in advance for your attention and advice.
