I just want to make the point that there are already many flavors of TIFF files that many standard "image viewer" applictions do not open. For example, old style JPEG, CIELab, JBIG compressed TIFF's, Tiled TIFF's, etc, etc. Whether we like it or not, that's the way TIFF is. Why change that philosophy now and create a new extension?

I don't recall that point being brought up.

It was, though not as directly and well put, see http://www.asmail.be/msg0055356809.html

I did not include it in the summary because it was not an argument against or for changing the extension, but merely an answer to an argument for changing the extension. That does not mean I think it's invalid or beside the point, I just thought it was not a direct key argument.
