Anybody know why the GrayResponse Curve and Units tags are marked as FIELD_IGNORE in tif_dir.c? Because of this I cannot get the curve for a file that has one. I hate to change tif_dir.c on my machine since I'll be out of date for the next drop...

I'm not sure of the exact reason that they are marked as such, but you could use Niles Ritter's xtif code (in contrib/tags) to add support for these tags. Note that you might have to replace the appropriate pointers in the FieldInfo list.
