Contrast this with bitmap image file formats; if a viewer supports GIF or TIFF G4 (say), then it *will* display images using that file format.
Not to disagree with the main thrust of this message, but I wish this particular claim were true! TIFF is actually rather poorly supported by many raster display utilities, at least on the PC. Staying just with monchrome images
- Many viewers do not handle G4 compression at all.
- Wang Imaging crashes on packbits compression.
- Tiled (as opposed to strip) format TIFFs are often not handled.
- The photometric interpretation tag is dealt with wrongly by many viewers (images are displayed with black & white reversed).
