Do I understand that 3.7.0 will not support big tiff files, but a later release will?

Right. It was previously announced that 3.7.0 is binary compatible with 3.6.1. The main purpose of 3.7.0 is to introduce a new build environment and baseline feature set.

The version supporting BigTIFF would be a 4.X release.
