Adobe's Technical Support Team is wrong(?!). You can do this with Aladdin Ghostscript 4.03. I just converted a document from PDF to TIFF G4 with this command:

gs -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=tiffg4 -sOutputFile=vitae.tif vitae.pdf

The latest Aladdin Ghostscript can be found at: ftp.cs.wisc.edu /ghost/aladdin

Of course you can always print the PDF file to a Postscript file and then rip that to TIFF.
