JBIG2 is excellent technology...

It can either be lossless or lossy, and supposedly is 3 to 5x smaller than G4/MMR.

MUCH smaller than that.

Of course, I take that with a grain of salt.

No, it's really cool technology - works in a completely different way from G3/G4 and related algorithms, which is how it achieves it's compression levels.

It's currently supported inside of the Acrobat spec (v 1.5?)

         1.4, actually.   Introduced in Acrobat 5.

and there is an open source decompression library already http://jbig2dec.sourceforge.net/, although it's still in alpha stages.

There are, however, no public implementations for compression. There are at least 4 commercial compressors that I know of...
