Is it so, then, that there can be no extra samples if the ReferenceBlackWhite tag is used? I am skeptical.

You should be... Must be that I can't remember seeing extra samples in TIFF files, only a lot of colorimetri tags :-) The applications I work with have a tendency to use more or less proprietary file formats when dealing with extra layers...

Anyway, I still interpret the spec so that the section 20 tags apply to RGB data (or data mapped to RGB) only, not to any extra samples.
