Most excellent! JBIG-KIT uses the GPL license (not LGPL) and I have heard that use of JBIG is covered by some patents. Since this is the case, should the configure script default to not supporting JBIG so that users don't accidentally violate licenses?
I am definetely not an expert in this stuff, but my understanding is that the license terms start working when the one distributes software binaries (sources must be available too as GPL requires). So if you do not want to be infected you just should not use JBIG library in your distributed software. On other hand authors of the free software (such as Linux distros) can switch this option on, because libtiff sources are always available. Please, correct me if my thoughts are wrong.
Patents is a separate problem and I am living it out of this discussion.
