Based on my own testing, libtiff's performance is quite good. The library is very robust and well tested.

Has anyone done any profiling in order to find out what type of bottlenecks currently exist in libtiff?

In my experience, the bottlenecks are in the system hardware and operating system, not libtiff. By definition, if the bottleneck is outside of libtiff, then libtiff does not have a bottleneck. :-)

This holds true for uncompressed files. Compressed formats are another matter entirely.
