However, I do not see mentioned any reasonable direction to follow for users of the unsupported/archived tools and features. (Forever using binaries of v4.5.1 tools is a silly suggestion. That would only work until the ABI breaks... which it eventually will.)
I think the idea is that there are three possible paths:
- People stop using them.
- People do maintenance on them within the tiff world and submit fully-baked high-quality changes, and if they become ok, re-enable them. I am really unclear on whether the tiff maintainers want to deal with this at all.
- People hoist the tools to another repo and maintain them there.
In the third case, it seems really obvious that it would be best to have a tifftools project that has the removed tools, and maintains them, and makes releases. Then everyone who wants them can share.
Copying them into hylafax addresses hylafax needs, but it doesn't help anyone else, and those other people won't want to help hylafax. I would view that as a very suboptimal outcome. But of course the license gives you permission to do this :-)
